I was introduced to FOSSASIA(FOSSASIA) in GCI 2k16. I was browsing for the organisations, I saw the FOSSASIA organisation . The organisation had a bit different concept than others. The tasks were a bit different and seemed to be amazing. As I was browsing I saw that the mentors were also awesome. The mentors helped the candidates trough various sites (i.e Slack,IRC channel and the mailing List).

This year I participated in Google Code-in with FOSSASIA(http://fossasia.org) through which I came to know about many new technologies. The Fossasia projects have personally developed my mind and I am able to think about it effectively. I was also helped by the mentors to complete the task easily through slack.

FOSSASIA

FOSSASIA (http://fossasia.org) is a non-profit organization supporting developers and makers of Free and Open Source technologies. It was founded in 2009 by Hong Phuc Dang and Mario Behling. The aim of FOSSASIA is to develop and adapt open technologies for social change with a focus on Asian users. The FOSSASIA Summit takes place annually one month after the Lunar New Year. Projects at FOSSASIA range from open hardware, to design, graphics and software. FOSSASIA offers resources to various open-source projects and organizes an annual Open Technology Summit for students, developers and start ups.

My favourite task

My favourite task was  “Website: Add your photo to the GCI FOSSASIA Site Student Section and Tweet about it” . In this task I properly got to know about github and it’s advantages. I created my account in the gci16.fossasia.org and learned to know how to tweet in Twiitter.

Improvements

The FOSSASIA organisation is already at its peak wuth the best mentors provided that the tasks should be a bit more innovative and interesting.Otherwise it is just awesome.

I would contribute to Fossasia and open source by doing the required work for it and helping other members solving their issues.

 First task with FOSSASIA

The very first task of mine with FOSSASIA was “Git: Learn how to create a fork of FOSSASIA repositories” . The tasks seemed to be a bit hard but was made easy with help of the amazing mentors of FOSSASIA. I contacted the mentors through SLACK to which they replied politely and I was able to do the task easily.

SUSI

INTRODUCTION

Susi is a server application which is able to collect messages from various sources, including twitter. The server contains a search index and a peer-to-peer index sharing interface. All messages are stored in an elasticsearch index. An automatic deployment from the development branch at GitHub is available for tests here https://susi-server.herokuapp.com

Communication

Please join our mailing list to discuss questions regarding the project: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/loklak

Our chat channel is on gitter here: https://gitter.im/fossasia/susi_server

Why should I use Susi?

If you like to be anonymous when searching things, want to archive tweets or messages about specific topics and if you are looking for a tool to create statistics about tweet topics, then you may consider Susi. With Susi you can:

  • collect and store a very, very large amount of tweets
  • create your own search engine for tweets
  • omit authentication enforcement for API requests on twitter
  • share tweets and tweet archives with other loklak users
  • search anonymously on your own search portal
  • create your own tweet search portal or statistical evaluations
  • use Kibana to analyze large amounts of tweets for statistical data.

Where to download SUSI

SUSI  can be downloaded in your Android phone from: https://github.com/fossasia/susi_android/raw/apk/susi-debug.apk

Bugs in SUSI Android App

  1. Some of the searches aren’t recognized by the application. Like:
    bug
  2. There are some abusive languages that are used by the app to the user.
    bug2

Features that should be added to the SUSI app

  1. There should be some default wallpapers in the application for the users.
    screenshot_2016-12-24-10-32-11
  2. The speaker button should be updated like that in whatsapp.

3.Open Event Android: Download and Install Open Event Android app on your Phone. Test it and report issues.

This task helped me to know that how we could download an .apk file from the repository. It also gave me an information how to write an issue on Github .

At last I want to conclude that I was truly motivated  by doing these tasks and came to know about many things of which I was unaware of.
